Minnesota Aurora Wins 3-0 over Rochester FC to Extend Their Heartland Division Lead
ROCHESTER, Minn. – Minnesota Aurora’s high press and scrappy play generated opportunities for Sophie French and Saige Wimes to score a goal apiece. Midfielder Katie Duong sealed the match with a long-distance freekick for 3-0.
In the 31st minute, Wimes intercepted a short clearance from Rochester goalkeeper Emma Knack and used the advantage to barrel down the sideline. Her cross bounced around in the box, eventually falling to French. French slotted her shot to the lower left side of the net to score.
The goal is French’s fourth of the 2024 season. French is the fifth Minnesota Aurora player to reach 10 career goals.
Rochester tried to break out of their defensive third – sending numbers forward – but Cat Rapp intercepted the pass. Rapp beat one defender and slid a pass to a wide-open Wimes for 2-0 in the 57th minute.
Wimes’ goal and assist earned her Star Tribune Star of the Game. “Saige is definitely somebody who’s got that ability to slice and dice. Her footwork is fantastic, and I’m really proud of her performance tonight, “ said Sporting Director and Head Coach Colette Montogmery.
Duong closed out the game with 3-0 in the 90th minute. After Rochester received their third yellow card of the match, Duong’s freekick prowess shined as she rocketed a shot from 35 yards out.
Montgomery was pleased with her team’s result, ending the game with 12 of 23 shots on goal. “We asked them at the beginning to have a professional performance, to get the job done tonight. Just a squad effort tonight. I think we saw them creating a variety of chances, a lot of creativity in the final third. Really good. Really solid effort.”
Minnesota Aurora’s next game is June 16 versus the Chicago Dutch Lions at TCO Stadium. Schedule and ticket information can be found at mnaurora.com. Home matches will be streamed by Fox 9+.
