Minnesota Aurora Shuts Out Bavarian United 5-0

EAGAN, Minn. – Minnesota Aurora (7-0-2) shut out and scored five goals in front of 5,225 fans, getting them one step closer to the USL W League playoffs. With the win, Aurora remains at the top of the table in the Heartland Division.

In the 12th minute, Katie Duong orchestrated a floating freekick to the backside of the post where it bounced around. Center back Julia Sattler headed it in for her first career goal and Aurora’s first of the match.

Four minutes laters, Duong scored a goal of her own, finishing off a deflected shot. Duong has at least one goal in her last three matches.

In the 26th, Jelena Zbiljic threw the ball back into play, connected on a quick one-two pass, and lofted a cross into the 18-yard box for Saige Wimes to knock down for 3-0. Zbiljic’s assist was named Minnesota Lottery’s Play of the Game.

Duong’s busy night continued on a 39th minute Aurora corner kick. Co-captain Addy Weichers scored with a header to wrap up the half 4-0.

“I’ve been having so much fun playing here,” said Star of the Game Katie Duong. “It’s been really fun to play with this team. Finding my rhythm with the team has been super fun these past couple of games.”

To close out the night, Duong tapped into her long-distance speciality, launching a left-footed shot past Bavarian’s goalkeeper. Sofia Bush picked up the assist in the 77th minute.

On her team’s 5-0 performance, Sporting Director and Head Coach Colette Montgomery said, “We’ve been working on finishing in training, a plethora of shots on goal. We got that ratio up in the first half – not as clinical in the second half – but all in all a good performance.”

Minnesota Aurora did not allow a shot from Bavarian United all match.

Minnesota Aurora’s next game is June 22 versus Chicago City SC at TCO Stadium for their Pride Match.
